YouthQuake: Sports as the Heartbeat of the Nation

As Singaporeans, we’ve definitely played sports at some point in our life – whether it is during school PE lessons, Co-Curricular Activities or a hobby we’ve picked up, or even in social gathering events. But beyond that, do we know how our local sports scene thrives and the challenges Singaporean athletes face in their pursuit for sports excellence?

WP Youth Wing invited three guest speakers, Former Weightlifting Youth Olympian Jamie Emma Wee, Floorball National Team Player Jowie Tan and Former National Bowling Coach William Woo. Each of them brought a unique and interesting perspective into the discussion of topics ranging from funding, sports culture, public awareness and support, local-born athletes and foreign talent, and even the impact of National Service on local sportsman.

Despite their diverse background and experiences, one thing was common – their love for the sport. Singapore may have a long road ahead in terms of sporting excellence, but it is not an impossible dream. Let’s keep this conversation open and going, and one day sports can be the heartbeat of the nation
