People of WP- Tham Wai Loon (Hougang)

I started volunteering with WP… as a polling agent during the Punggol East by-election in January 2013. After which, I continued to volunteer in Hougang SMC, doing my little part to contribute in areas where it was lacking in labour. I was then entrusted with more responsibilities in grassroots work and events.

The reason I volunteer with WP is… back then, I was motivated to do my part in supporting ‘socialism’ and ‘democracy’ and I hold a strong preference to WP which is always connected to the ground, responsible and strives to leave no one behind. I am aware that time is precious and have considered carefully before volunteering my time to WP.

I have lived in Hougang for 17 years and fellow residents have moved my heart. I recall one uncle saying, “No lift upgrading is ok. I can climb the stairs.” Their spirit, sacrifices and heart truly make serving them absolutely worthwhile!

The most memorable WP and Hougang moment was… my first Christmas event back in 2013 when I was the main planner. The satisfaction of putting together a successful event was really great. It was also my first time performing on stage for the past 36 years, together with some of my fellow Hougang Constituency Committee (HGCC) teammates as a background singer during the HGCC CNY event 2017. All these are memorable moments which I want to keep till I turn old.

Now that WP turns 60 this year, my wish for the party is… to be stronger every year, maintain our core values to serve Singapore better. People are our greatest asset! I hope more people will step up to contribute. We can learn from one another and grow together to help WP serve residents even better. Through sincerity and hard work, I believe the party can earn more public trust.

When I am not volunteering for WP-related activities, I am… spending time with family and friends. It can be tiring with more commitment and responsibilities, so I really have to manage my time properly as I also do not want to miss the precious moments of witnessing my children growing up!
