During GE 2011, I brought my dad to the rally and saw such a huge crowd. Thinking that WP may need more manpower, I decided to volunteer my service during the election period, but I was not called up at that time. Then came the news of the Hougang by-election and I immediately submitted my application again.
I started volunteering with WP in May 2012 during the Hougang by-election. After that I joined Serangoon Division to help out with welfare and social events. Subsequently, I was posted to Jalan Besar Division to help with house visits during GE 2015. I am currently still active in Jalan Besar Division doing weekly house visits, as well as helping out in Serangoon Division.
My most memorable WP moment so far is being a bus trip IC for Serangoon Division’s One Day JB Shopping Tour. Fortunately, I was with an experienced partner, Uncle Joseph! As a bus IC, you will be the first to alight from the bus and the last to board the bus. When it comes to meals, you will be the last to eat and first to be ready to go. But seeing the happy faces of the residents made me feel it was all worthwhile!
I enjoy volunteering with WP because I can feel the Kampong spirit amongst the volunteers. Whenever I volunteer at events in Serangoon Division, I will definitely bring my wife and my 4 year old son along. In fact, my son has been “attending” the events even before he was born!
Now that WP turns 60 this year, my wish for the party is to stay strong for many more years and to win one-thirds of the seats in Parliament to be a loud voice for Singaporeans.
